Berea, KY - On Tuesday, September 23, students at Berea College gathered on the patio outside the Alumni Building to raise awareness about the benefits and needs for Local and Fair Trade products in Food Service and the Crossroads Café. Serving salsa prepared from fresh ingredients from the Berea Farmers' Market, the students advertised the location of the market and encouraged people to sign a petition to promote more local and fair trade products. Representatives from HEAL (Healing the Earth and Learning), Oxfam, Bereans for Appalachia, and the Local Foods Initiative helped run the tabling session.
The student initiated event was part of the Real Food Challenge national Month of Action. They also held a "Garden of Eat-In" protest on October 9, which included a local and fair trade meal for all Berea College students. Live music from campus bands, slam poetry, a honey bee box, and information about campus organizations was available among other things.
The Berea chapter of Oxfam and HEAL helped sponsored these events. Oxfam is an international organization which works to eliminate poverty and social injustice with long-lasting solutions. HEAL is a student run group working to promote sustainable practices on campus.
